The artist I have chosen is CHOW CHUN
FAI.
The first time I know about this artist and appreciate his work was in the "Annual Art Exhibition 2005" of the Chinese University of Hong Kong...
At that time, I was just a secondary 3 student who was brought by my Art teacher for the visit. I don't even know who Chow Chui Fai is actually... But to me, his Renaissance Trilogy has become the most impressive work in the show and I started to remember the name of “Chow Chun Fai”.

I was so excited to see these works.
They were familiar to me, as I recognized that they are reproduction of the 3
classical Western masterpieces which I learnt from history textbook. I didn’t realize
the meaning the artist wanted to express; rather I just think it is full of fun
and humor in which all characters in the installation are the same person (I discovered that the character was the artist himself later). This made his works stood out of the other artists’ exhibits in the
show.
Wow is the first feeling i came to my mind. CHOW CHUN FAI used a combination between ancient famous painting and modern technology to create a series of artwork. I is so much fun. I believe he may want to tell that, " Hey there! Art is not boring, it is full of fun and joy! Wanna come join me?"
回覆刪除His artwork is very different from the other artist as it is not a painting or comics or animation. It is just a fusion of modern and ancient technology and paintings’ really like them as i feel like i can join him to create an artwork that only belongs to me, that i have the chance to turn a famous painting into my own artwork. I hope he will create more interesting work for us.
I like the photo installation so much! The redesign of the masterpiece is really awesome! For example, “last supper” is a well-known masterpiece and most of us should know about it for sure. After the photo installation, the artwork become less sedate but more amiable. He used his face to install on the artwork and create a funny scene. It shows that art is not that serious and dull, in fact, it can be so witty. Also, I reckon that the reproduction of western classical painting is a kind of paying homage to the art masters. This kind of funny presentation inspires me a lot and I like this kind of art! I wish I could have a chance to try the similar things like this!
回覆刪除Chow Chun Fai is quite a superb artist in the photo installation. Collage of photographs is a Western technique and it is practiced much more commonly nowadays. The artist used the photos of his face in creating the series of Renaissance Trilogy. Although he designed the artwork based on some Western masterpiece like "Last Supper" by Leonardo da Vinci, the use of his own photos makes it become original. It makes the photo installation much more fantastic that the artist was trying to show people different gestures and postures. It lets me imagine that the background idea of the artist is to reflect different personalities or characteristics of his own self by using various facial expressions, gestures or postures. Every one of us has different emotions, personalities and gestures at different time. I think the artist wants to reflect the uniqueness and multi-personality of every person. I admire him that he is not just copying from the original masterpiece but a reproduction of it by his creativity. The series of artwork is very extraordinary!
回覆刪除It is a pleasure scrolling through the series of Renaissance Trilogy created by the artist. It is very difficult for artists to base their artworks on ancient famous painting, as there must be comparison. At first sight, I thought all the artwork have nothing special going on. Yet, with a closer look, the way how the artist execute the work amaze me.
回覆刪除Ancient masterpiece often talks about the great divine, and gives a sense of solemn to the audience. While in this series by Chow Chun Fai, by using his portrait to re-create the ancient artwork, he has made the artwork more fun to look at, included an element of himself into the work, thus a sense of humanity into it.
To me, I would view this series of work as an expression of the artist’s attitude towards the trend of mixed-media art. Creating these paintings, I think the artist is not only exploring the possibilities of this kind of art but also trying to tell us that he thinks that mixed-media art can re-define art, or give a whole new meaning to artwork.
Personally, I am not a big fan of ancient painting, as I think they are very dull and the painting’s subject is always related to gods, which to me, seems very hard to approach. However, I love this series of Renaissance Trilogy, for I found it fun and relaxing to look at. The way how the artist presented his work has definitely broaden the circle art can reach.

The artist use installation and combination with some famous artwork to create a new view to us. This is very creative and interesting. The method used in the artwork is very different from the other artist, such as painting and photography. We can see the artist is really enjoy in making artwork, as we can see the artwork is funny and very 'modern'.
回覆刪除I think in your review of the artist, you can include the way and the reason why the artist use this method to create artwork. Seems what he wants to express is hard to realize, maybe you can also think that, is the artist gets success in his work?
